The Laccadive Sea lies off the southwest coast of Arabian sea, about 225 to 450 km from the Kerala coast boardering the southern point of Sri Lanka to the the Maldives. This sea has a stable water temperature through the year and is rich in marine life, coral fauna and reef associated resources.
The sea consist of 36 islands, 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks. Only 11 of the 36 islands are inhabited. Geographically, the islands and this ridge is supposed to be a continuation of the Arravali mountains, and the islands are believed to be remnants of the submerged mountain cliffs.
The coral reef systems of the Lakshadweep region are unique from an ecological perspective. The region around Lakshadweep Islands is characterized by shallow submerged`reef banks. The majorority of coral reefs in South Asia consists in the Lakshadweep, the Maldives and Chagos archipelagos.
Most of the islands have lagoon on the Western side, which offers a natural protection to the islands from the open sea. Both the south-west and north-east monsoons contribute to a total annual rainfall of about 1600 mm. Lakshadweep has a tropical climate, with temperature ranging between 27 degree C to 32 degree C. The main occupations of the people are fishing, coconut cultivation and coir twisting. Tourism is an emerging industry.
